Building a Sustainable Future
Seminars to reveal best practice and innovationMedia Release 15 January 2008

The effects of climate change on the building, construction and architecture industries will be a primary focus of this year’s Form & Function Seminar Series.
Held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre April 10 – 12, leading professionals from organisations such as The Australian Tile Council, Think Brick, the Government of Western Australia, Bates Smart, and HASSEL will deliver a three-day program that will arm building professionals with the inside-knowledge they need to construct a better built environment.
The Form & Function Seminar Series is an event highlight that aims to provide insight and discussion across topical issues facing the industry - new practices, processes and materials in the wake of climate change, emerging building, construction and design trends for residential, commercial and public projects, new materials and their applications and a better understanding of industry compliance.
Seminar Speakers:
With the advent of mass housing and the mentality that bigger is better when it comes to housing, an opportunity
exists for architects to play an important role in shaping sustainable solutions to reduce the impact mass-housing has
on the environment. In his seminar titled Housing and Architects, Geoffrey London of the Government of
Western Australia and University of Western Australia, will examine ways innovative architectural design can lead
to successful sustainable mass housing projects.
What makes for sustainable housing design in Australia might not be sustainable in other parts of the world. Architect
Paul Pholeros will discuss in his seminar, Sustainable Housing, examples of best-practice sustainable housing
design from China to the coast and centre of Australia. The seminar will address how effective sustainable design can
meet varying climate demands anywhere in the world.
Corporations are increasingly embracing large open plan office designs in a nostalgic attempt to emulate the ‘common room’ virtues of communication and collegiality. But does the approach work? Chaired by Cameron Bruhn
of Artichoke magazine and presented by Philip Vivian, of Bates Smart; Angelo Di Marco, of Woodhead; and
Matthew Blain, Hassell, the Campus Work/Life seminar will examine this new-age environment on the corporate
culture.
An intense focus on sustainable building design is gripping the building industry. Dean Alexander Homicki, of DTAC; Warren Meadley, of Group GSA; Chris Porter, of Access Consultant; along with mediator Chris Bertacco, of INSAFE will discuss how this focus on sustainable design and intensified Australian Standards compliance demands have created a fresh, dedicated industry approach to deliver genuine sustainable and costsaving solutions.
Thermal conservation is a crucial element of sustainable building practice. In his seminar, Section J and Precast Concrete, Ric Butt, of National Precast Concrete Association Australia, will discuss the latest innovations in precast concrete and how these innovations can be implemented to satisfy the latest requirements of Section J of the Building Code of Australia. The thermal performance of precast concrete will also be addressed.
With industry standards demanding buildings adopt energy-saving techniques, architects need to know the latest
products on the market that can help meet ever-increasing toughened environmental constraints. Cathy Inglis, of
Think Brick, will present simple techniques and the latest innovations in thermal brick products in her seminar,
Designing for Climate: An Introduction.
Additional highlights include:
- Peter Webb, of National Precast, will present Shape Colour and Texture – Your vision into reality with Precast Concrete
- Gary Schwartz, of the Australian Tile Council, will present Deciphering the latest Adhesive Grout and Membrane Standards
- Geoff Warn, John Wardle, Liam Proberts, of Think Brick, will present About Face: A Coastal Perspective
- Graham Rob, of the Australian Tile Council, will present Fixing Large and/or Heavy Wall Tiles
Bookings for the Seminar Series are essential and can be made via the Form & Function website,
www.formandfunctionexpo.com.au. Seminars cost $25 each. Pre-registration for the event is free.
